Living with Wolves

Building a future where wolves and people in the Afroalpine highlands coexist.

For 30 years, EWCP has built trust with Afroalpine communities. Our Living with Wolves (LwW) project champions awareness and behavioural change to tackle daily conflicts that threaten wolf survival.  LwW was set up with

the objective of  engaging with communities living inside and along the buffer zones of Ethiopian wolf habitat to change their attitudes towards this iconic species of the Afroalpine.

From responsible dog ownership to wolf-friendly tourism, we work with the communities throughout wolf range to foster coexistence, and build  a better future for both people and wildlife. From young children to major stakeholders, this engagement work is one of the backbones of EWCP’s long-term success. Our vision is to safeguard Ethiopian wolves alongside the people who share their highlands.

For over 25 years, Living with Wolves has:

Created more open communication and collaboration between EWCP, the protected areas, and individual kebeles.

Travelled to villages, schools, and different stakeholders across the Bale Mountains National Park and the neighbouring zone of West Arsi.

Engaged thousands of community members and school students with talks, meetings, presentations, printed materials, and events across 5 woredas.

Promoted better disease awareness and increased the uptake of domestic dog vaccinations in collaboration with the One Health project.
